Heute gehen wir nach Frankfurt von Heidelberg. Die Fahrt ist 45 Minuten. Afterwards, we took a 20 minute bus ride and stopped in Darmstadt to drop off our luggage at the hostel. The first activity we did was the tour of Frankfurt. One thing I noticed first were the skyscrapers. The sky scrapers were all in one section and were very modern. This was because Frankfurt was the only city allowed to build them.

Another interesting thing I noticed while on tour was the old historical buildings. They had many that dated back all the way from the 1200’s-1500’s but a lot were destroyed by the bombings during World War II. Some were restored and some were not destroyed which kept some of the parts of city looking historical.

Later that day, we had dinner at Hans im Glück. It was very interesting with birch trees placed everywhere around the restaurant. I noticed the bathrooms signs were different though. For men it said “Bubb” and for women it said “Mädsche” and I believe those were dialect words. The food was focused on burgers and was a newer restaurant instead of traditional German restaurants we went to.

Heute wir gehen von Heidelberg nach FrankfurtHeute ist sehr kalt und windig, aber der Stadt ist sehr schön und voller geschichte. We started the day early with breakfast in Heidelberg. We checked into the hostel and dropped off our bags. Then we took the train to Frankfurt, and had a tour of the city. One thing I noticed was the skyscrapers. Frankfurt is the only city in Germany that is allowed to build them, and therefore people refer to Frankfurt as the New York of Germany.

Then, we got to eat lunch with an American diplomat! It was extremely interesting to hear about his life. He had majored in theater and ended up as a diplomat because they wanted a more diverse group of thinkers. It was inspiring to hear about how his career had taken unexpected path, and still been fulfilling for him.

Next, we saw the Germany parliament building which was the first building with heating in Germany! Afterward we walked around the Römer, which has a room full of 1900 era portraits of each Kaiser of Germany. It was very interesting to see how the Kaisers had changed over hundreds of years. Then we had a tour of the city and got to climb to the top of the Cathedral of St Bartholomew. The view was beautiful! Finally, we finished off the night with dinner at Hans im Glück.
