Inspiring a new generation of students to study abroad

- von Rachael

Heute, wir haben TU Braunschweig besuchen. Eine kleine Gruppe haben die Wasserlab

besuchen. There were many different lab setups and tools that we saw. The first was a 3D

water basin which is used for experiments regarding coastal erosion. There were two different basins, one small and one large. There were also a few types of wave plume lines. These are large indents where water held and a wave can be generated at one end. I found these incredibly interesting because a URI IEP student explained the research she worked on using one of the tanks. Her research includes how different types of tsunami walls can help or hinder an area. The small group was also shown a setup which researched how coral and other types of plants are able to help reduce coastal erosion. At the end of the tour, the tour guide explained how a new development is to have equipment entirely made of plastic so that salt water can be used in experiments. This would allow for more realistic experiments to be conducted since live mussels can be used (which are important parts of costliness).

Danach, wir haben ICTV und PVZ besuchen. ICTV ist „Institute for chemical and Thermal Process Engineering“ und PVZ ist ein Pharmakonforschungfirma. Wir haben das PVZ Lab besuchen. During this tour, we saw many different types of chemical labs. The interesting part about this was that the labs were all relatively new. Most of the equipment had just been installed. One of the most interesting tools I found is a pill press. The reason I found this interesting is because a few days ago, I saw an early form of a pill press at Merck. It was interesting to see the difference in design but how it still has the same basics. There is a picture attached below. After the tour, we heard a presentation on PVZ and ICT.

Danach, wir haben einer Präsentation von einer Studentin von URI IEP. Sie forsche Hydrogel für Pharma. This presentation was very informative and again I found it interesting to see a URI student doing research here. She also talked a bit about how her year abroad is going. This was the most interesting part because I am always interested to hear tips from IEP students on how to adjust to school in Germany. A bit later, we heard a presentation on another form of research that a URI student is working on. This was on electric motors and how to optimize their performance.

Um sechs Uhr, wir haben Abendessen mit Studenten von URI und Braunschweig. I got to talk to a student who is going to study at URI in a year. We were able to talk in German for a bit which was good practice for me. Overal, l today was a very informative day and I felt it has given me valuable information for when I do study in Germany for a year.
